In order to delve into the Ancient Greek Olympics, one must get a general understanding of the period in time when these athletes competed.
In Ancient Greece only men were able to participate in the Olympic events and attend as spectators. These athletes competed for themselves and were not part of a team. The competitions included running, jumping, wrestling and boxing. The machismo of these events were rewarded with olive branch crowns and the glory of victory back to their city.
If you were an athlete in Ancient Greece, would you change or add any events? What prizes would you reward the athletes? What are your thought on only MEN being able to participate? And finally, why do you think the Olympics were started and still take place in this day in age?
Many of these questions will be answered in this blog. Make sure to make comments and ask questions.

I think this was a good brief, straight to the point introduction about the Olympics to get the students engaged and thinking. I also like the questioned you proposed to your students because it can lead to some meaningful discussions. Particularly, I like the question on why only men were allowed to particpate because the girls can get involved on another level other than what kind of sport they like or which kind of sport do they play. This question integrates other aspects of Greek society, which can ultimately lead to an insightful class discussion.
ReplyDeleteCompetition is a quality that people in our society still have. In the sports environment, no matter if you are competing within a team or not, there is always a personal satisfaction. This personal satisfaction when its put together in a team is what allows the whole team to get a reward or to get the first prize.
ReplyDeleteBringing the figure of the Women to the Olympic Games was a big step; however, bringing people with different disabilities and allowing them to participate in this games is what really shows how our society is accepting every single human being as equal and as a sport player.
